TriggerPoint foam roller, 13 inch

A hollow roller with a rigid core and a textured surface, so it keeps its shape under body weight.

Foam roller and mat on the floor

Photograph illustrates the category, not this exact model.

What it is good at

  • Holding its shape because the core is hollow and rigid
  • A surface pattern that varies the pressure along the length
  • Being light enough to take to a gym or a field

Check before you buy

  • Diameter and length against the areas you plan to roll
  • Surface type: smooth, grid, or raised trigger points
  • Hollow core against solid foam, which softens with use

Who it is not for

Anyone who wants a soft roller for broad, gentle work across the whole back.

A foam roller is a tube that takes your body weight, so the core decides how long it lasts. Hollow rollers with a rigid inner tube hold their shape, while solid foam compresses over months of use and slowly becomes a softer tool than the one you bought.

Diameter changes how the pressure is spread. A large roller distributes it across a wider area, and a small one concentrates it. Neither is better on its own terms, because the choice follows what you are rolling rather than a specification sheet.

A handheld percussion device: a motor in a handle, an arm, and a set of interchangeable heads.

Recovery and mobility

Manduka yoga mat, 5 mm

A dense mat that lies flat, grips when hands warm up, and does not shed foam crumbs.

Best for
Floor work, stretching and bodyweight sessions on tile, concrete or floorboards.
Watch out for
A closed-cell mat is heavier than it looks and takes a few sessions to lose its slick surface.
